It consists of two main parts: the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which connects the CNS to the rest of the body. These two systems work together to control everything from voluntary actions like moving your arm to involuntary actions like breathing and digesting food.
At its core, the nervous system is about communication. It receives sensory information from the environment, processes it and then sends signals to muscles and glands to respond appropriately.
